Digital Eye Strain: Symptoms, Causes and How to Stop It
Digital eye strain is blurry, dry, achy eyes after long screen use. It happens because you blink less on screens — about 5–7 times a minute instead of 15 — and your eyes keep focusing up close. It doesn't cause permanent damage, and changing your distance, breaks and brightness helps a lot.
Common symptoms
- Blurry vision after using a screen
- Dry, gritty eyes
- Achy, uncomfortable eyes
- Watering or stinging
One review of the research estimates up to half of screen users experience these symptoms. It's common enough to shrug off, but small habit changes make a real difference.
What causes it?
You blink less. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), people normally blink about 15 times a minute, but only 5–7 times while using screens. Fewer blinks means the surface of your eye dries out.
You focus up close for hours. The closer the screen, the harder your eye muscles work. See How Far Should You Hold Your Phone? for the right distance.
Your screen and room don't match. A bright screen in a dark room, or glare on the screen, tires your eyes faster.
Does it permanently damage your eyes?
No. The AAO says long screen use won't permanently damage your eyes. Digital eye strain is temporary and improves with rest.
For kids, though, long periods of close-up viewing are linked to faster myopia progression, so distance habits still matter. See Can Holding Your Phone Too Close Cause Myopia?
How to reduce digital eye strain
- Keep your distance: 13–20 in (33–50 cm) for phones, about 25 in (63 cm) for monitors.
- Take breaks: look up and focus on something far away. The 20-20-20 rule is one way to do it.
- Blink on purpose: when your eyes feel dry, slowly blink a few times.
- Match brightness: set screen brightness to your surroundings and bump up contrast. A matte screen filter helps with glare.
- Artificial tears: use them to refresh dry eyes.

When to see an eye doctor
If symptoms don't improve with rest, your vision stays blurry, or you have significant pain or redness, something else may be going on. An outdated glasses prescription can also cause strain, so get your eyes checked.
